Damaged panels

When one damaged panel does not mean a new door

Garage door panel replacement swaps a single dented, cracked or warped panel for a new one while the rest of the door stays in place. A residential sectional door is built from 4 or so horizontal panels joined by hinges, and each one can be unbolted from the hinges and the track rollers without taking the door apart.

The usual causes are a car bumper or a bicycle handlebar, a hard impact from a snow shovel or plow, and a door that was forced shut after it jammed. A panel that is bent or cracked also stops the door from folding evenly through the curve of the track, so the door can bind, rub or hang crooked. Fixing it early protects the hinges, rollers and opener from the extra strain.

The catch is the match. The new panel has to fit the same height, width, thickness, profile and color as the others, and an older door may use a style that is no longer made. When that happens, the contractor will say so plainly, and replacing the whole door becomes the better choice.

Before ordering

What a good contractor checks before ordering a panel

Panel position

Panels are counted from the bottom. The bottom panel takes the most damage and carries the bottom seal and corner brackets, so it is the one most often replaced. A top panel also holds the opener bracket, which changes how the work is done.

Door make and model

Panels come in set heights, commonly 18 or 21 inches, in steel, wood or composite. The contractor reads the label or measures the door to see whether the same panel is still available.

Insulation and thickness

Insulated panels are filled with polyurethane or polystyrene, and the thickness has to match the neighbors so hinges and rollers sit correctly. Boston winters make this worth getting right.

Hinges, rollers and track

A hit hard enough to dent a panel often bends a hinge or knocks a roller out of shape. A careful contractor checks all of them while the panel is out.

Spring balance

Removing a panel changes the weight the springs carry, so the door is secured first and balanced again after. Spring work stays with the technician. Broken garage door spring problems are a separate repair.

How it works

How getting connected for panel replacement works

  1. Pick up the phone

The call is answered around the clock, so you can reach someone as soon as you notice the damage.

  2. Describe the panel once

Say which panel is damaged, what happened, and whether the door still opens and closes. If you can read the brand label on the door, mention it.

  3. A local contractor takes it from there

We connect you with an independent contractor who works in Boston and nearby towns and handles panel jobs. You talk to the contractor directly.

  4. You decide

The contractor looks at the door, gives you the quote and the timing, and answers questions about warranty terms. You choose whether to go ahead.

FAQ

Panel replacement questions

Can a single panel be replaced, or does the whole door have to go?

A single panel can be replaced when the same panel is still made for your door. The contractor checks the brand, model, height and profile first. If the style has been discontinued or the door is badly worn, a full door is the more sensible result, and the contractor will tell you so.

What should I have ready when I call?

Know which panel is damaged, counting up from the bottom, and roughly how wide and tall the door is. A photo of the damage and of any label on the door helps the contractor identify the model quickly.

Is it safe to keep using the door with a cracked panel?

It is better to stop using it until a contractor looks at it. A cracked panel can flex and bind in the track, and that puts strain on the hinges, the rollers and the opener. A small cosmetic dent is less urgent than a crease or a split.

Will the new panel match the paint or finish?

Factory panels are made in set colors, so a new one matches best on a fairly recent door. On older or repainted doors the contractor may suggest painting the new panel to match. Ask them what they expect before the work starts.

Who gives the quote and does the work?

An independent local contractor does both. We connect your call to a contractor who handles panel jobs and does not perform the work ourselves, and you decide whether to accept what the contractor offers.
